Eye lifts are among the most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons.
Last year, it was ranked number third in the top five cosmetic surgeries, coming in behind breast augmentation and rhinoplasty with over 215,000 performed. Eye lifts (also known as blepharoplasty) are so popular because they are one of the safest cosmetic procedures available and because they can do so much for the patient.
Your Eyes
Eyes have long been considered one of the most expressive parts of the human face. They project our emotions, opinions, and state of being. However, as a person ages, the eyes may not always be an accurate representation of a person’s feelings. Aging causes the skin to lose collagen and elastin, two substances that keep the skin tight and firm. Over time, gravity and the lack of these substances cause the skin to become loose and sag.
This occurrence can be especially problematic around the eyes because the skin is very thin. It’s why you start to get wrinkles around your eyes before anywhere else on your face. You can also develop dark circles or a puffy look to the eyes. All these things combine to make you look older and more tired than you are.For some, aging can also cause drooping eyelids, which block a person’s ability to see clearly and make wearing glasses more difficult.
How an Eye Lift Can Help
Blepharoplasty is designed to improve the appearance and function of your eyes. This can be done by making adjustments to the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. The surgeon will make a determination on the best way to give you the best results during your consultation.
The procedure only takes a couple of hours and is done under general anesthesia. The surgeon will start with an incision to the eyelid. For the upper eyelid, this will be at the spot in the middle of the lid where the eye naturally creases. On the lower lid, the incision is made on the inside of the lid or on the outside of the lid right below the lash line. The surgeon can then make any necessary adjustments by tightening the eyelid muscles, repositioning fat deposits, and removing any excess skin or fat. The incisions can then be closed with sutures or adhesive tape.
Recovery from the procedure takes about a month. Patients generally experience some pain and swelling, which can be managed with prescription medication and cold compresses. The worst of the soreness usually goes away after the first week.
