Many people think that liposculpture and liposuction are different names for the same thing. They do sound similar, but in fact, liposculpture is a smaller form of liposuction. Liposuction focuses on fat removal in large target areas, usually as part of a major reconstructive surgery. It is a common element in procedures like tummy tucks, arm lifts, and breast reductions. Liposculpture, on the other hand, removes or reshapes fat as a way of providing contours and muscle definition to the body. It’s much more subtle and makes the perfect finishing touch to any cosmetic surgery.
How Liposculpture Is Done
The procedures of liposculpture and liposuction are similar. Different surgeons use different techniques, but here at Hobgood Facial Plastic Surgery, we use the tumescent fluid method.
“Tumescent”is a term that means swollen and firm. The technique involves injecting the liposculpture target area with a combination fluid of anesthesia and blood vessel constrictor. This both numbs the area and restricts blood flow, reducing the amount of swelling and bruising. The tumescent technique also keeps the body in fluids to prevent the need for IVs. The skin becomes swollen and firms up, allowing the surgeon easy access to the subcutaneous layers of fat cells.
Once the target area is prepared with the tumescent liquids, the surgeon makes a small incision and inserts a cannula (a very tiny tube). Fat deposits are then sucked out through the cannula. After removing the necessary amount of fatty tissue, the surgeon then reshapes any remaining fat to provide the best contouring. The result is a more enhanced and well-defined body.
Liposculpture Recovery
Because liposculpture does not involve large target areas, it is a much easier recovery period than full liposuction. Recovery usually takes one to three weeks with final results seen in about four to six months. There will likely be some minor swelling and bruising, and probably some mild pain. Your surgeon will provide you with a complete set of recovery instructions to make the process as easy as possible.
