If you’re bothered by neck bands, excess fat, or a “turkey neck” caused by loose skin, a neck lift performed at our Scottsdale, Arizona, practice near Phoenix creates an angular jawline and enhances the chin’s definition with or without a lower facelift. Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Todd Hobgood tailors his approach to your specific needs, producing attractively contoured results that look natural.
Is a Deep Neck Lift Right for You?
Dr. Hobgood often combines facelift surgery with a neck lift, but some patients can benefit from a deep neck lift without a facelift. Many men and women believe their necks add years to their appearance, even though they have relatively smooth, firm facial skin. Slimming and smoothing the neck can improve your self-confidence and restore your natural youthful appearance.

During your consultation, Dr. Hobgood crafts a personalized surgical plan for your specific needs. Not all patients with concerns about the appearance of their necks need a deep neck lift, and Dr. Hobgood uses a graduated approach that produces the desired results with the least invasive treatment. Every patient is unique. He studies key aspects of anatomy and age-related changes to develop a personalized plan.
Key aspects that contribute to your individualized surgical plan include:
Amount and elasticity of skin in the neck and lower face
Fat on top of the platysma muscle (treated with liposuction)
Banding and looseness of the platysma (treated with platysma plication)
Fat located deep under the platysma muscle (treated with deep neck lift contouring)
Position and size of the large submandibular glands in the neck (treated with lower gland removal)
Natural angle of the neck to the chin (mentocervical angle)
Submental Liposuction
Dr. Hobgood usually performs submental (under the chin) liposuction for younger patients whose skin retains most of its elasticity. In younger patients, the skin is more likely to tighten after Dr. Hobgood removes neck fat, creating a more defined and sharper appearance. He performs the procedure with the patient under a general anesthetic and starts by making a ¼-inch incision under the chin. He then uses a specialized liposuction technique, liposculpture, designed for small areas. Dr. Hobgood removes excess superficial fat with a thin tube called a cannula and sculpts toned, natural-looking contours.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and recovery is usually 1 week with limited bruising. Patients wear a compression dressing during the first week to minimize swelling and ensure the best results. This is considered one of the least invasive procedures available to improve the neck and jawline.
Platysma Plication (Neck Muscle Corset Procedure)
Women and men bothered by vertical turkey neck bands that add years to their appearance can benefit from this procedure. During this surgery, Dr. Hobgood first separates the loose bands of muscle from the deeper tissues to allow movement. He then sews them together in a corset procedure to produce a permanently sharper angle under the chin.
Sometimes, Dr. Hobgood will combine a platysma plication corset procedure with submental liposuction for excellent outcomes.
In patients with more excess skin, Dr. Hobgood will recommend performing a lower facelift with the platysma plication to lift the skin and create a streamlined neck with a well-defined jawline. Patients usually need 3 weeks to recover.

Dr. Hobgood recommends a deep neck lift if you have sagging skin and excess deep tissue neck fat. In addition to superficial neck liposuction and neck band tightening described above, he surgically contours fat under the platysma muscle. In some cases, Dr. Hobgood may contour digastric muscles in the neck (used for chewing and swallowing) along with salivary glands in the upper neck. Although he may perform a deep neck lift independently, most patients older than 40 get more impressive results by combining a deep neck lift with a lower facelift or a deep plane facelift. In either case, Dr. Hobgood’s precise technique conceals scars and produces natural-looking results.
Dr. Hobgood performs deep neck lift surgery as an outpatient procedure at the state-of-the-art Paradise Valley Multi-Specialty Surgery Center. The center is fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Centers (AAAHC), which ensures your safety with state-of-the-art equipment. You’ll be under a general anesthetic during the surgery, which typically lasts about 4 to 6 hours, and return home on the day of the procedure.

How Long Is Recovery After a Deep Neck Lift?
You should plan to take 2 weeks off from work after a deep neck lift and expect the recovery to take 3 weeks. Each patient’s specific recovery depends on how fast you typically heal and the extent of the surgery. Most patients experience some bruising and swelling, and some may also feel tightness or pulling in the days after the surgery. You can manage post-op discomfort with prescription pain medication.
You’ll begin seeing the results once the swelling starts subsiding. It can take a few more months before you see the final outcome of the surgery—a smoother, tighter, more contoured neck. Because Dr. Hobgood takes great care when making the incisions, scarring is minimal.
